"Hey, D.J., stop the car!" McCall's voice drifted to her through a long tunnel. But she still had enough sense to move her foot from the accelerator to the brake. Her leg weighed a ton, and when she planted her boot on the brake pedal the car jerked and bucked. |

"D.J.!" McCall shouted her name. When she looked at him he pointed to her blouse. His mouth moved. "What happened?" But no sound came out. She looked down and her eyes widened. |

The entire front of her blouse bled red. Sweat hadn't been trickling between her breasts. The tickle of liquid had been a river of blood. |

D.J. looked at McCall once more, but he wasn't looking at her. Instead, he grabbed the wheel from her slack hands and twisted it to the right. They slid to a stop on the gravel lining the side of the road. |

The world spun faster and faster, until her stomach rebelled at the speed. Somehow McCall had gotten her to lay her head in his lap as he'd laid his in hers. Had that been moments or hours ago? She stared at his concerned face and watched the blackness close in on her from every corner. Just before the dark curtain met and obliterated the world from her consciousness, D.J. motioned McCall nearer. |
